MAXIMUM SECURITY

Commercial Egg Laying Units

Veranda Area

This is the area immediately outside the popholes.  This should be as wide as possible, at least 6m wide and made up of rough ballast or stone. It has to be as dry as possible as hens will take muck into house. Hens claws need to be worked and the muck needs to be able to percolate through.

Boundary Fencing

Fixed mesh fencing is the obvious but it is very expensive to erect and unless very high and dug in is no barrier.  Multi line electric is cheap to put up and works. You may have to look after it a bit. This is helped by bringing the fence into the field so you can get both sides with topper and spray fence line with roundup. I reccomend the first 25/50m of fencing from the end of the shed is done solid and then the electric fence is started. This will give more hen control where hens are dense. Contact me: I can usually save you money on the boundary fence!!

9 Line Electric Fencing

This is made up by 9 separate lines of stranded wire running through insulators on galvanised metal stakes and tensioned from wooden strainer posts. Wooden strainer posts are used at each change of direction. The customer supplies the wooden posts and installs them. I do the rest. A powerful geared energiser is used to power the system, all that is needed is a standard 13amp socket.  They use little electricity and usually last for years.

12 Line Electric Fencing

This is advised where there is a high fox density or high value of individual birds.  It is exactly the same overall height of 9 line but wires are closer together.

ORGANIC STATUS - YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SPRAY THE FENCE LINE

You can either strim/mow the line (wheeled strimmers are available)
or you can use Mypex offcut rolls of
plastic to stop growth.  The rolls are 80cm x 100m and are pinned down
with plastic pegs.

Outside Flock Control

Inside the shed the flocks are divided.  There
is nothing to say outside has to be the same,
but it can help stopping hens all going back into one area and can help stop the immediate ground from being worn out.  Remember dirty eggs slow the packers down!

This can be achieved by using fixed mesh fencing, 6/8 line electric fencing, poultry nets or a mix of any.

NOTE - Multi line fencing fencing is the cheapest and most efficient way of deterring intruders.  However, it must be maintained to achieve maximum security.

There is only one thing that will stop a fox dead..it comes out the end of a gun!
I stop them..alive!! There is no cheaper or better combination.
