Electric Fencing & Free Range Poultry

Internal Wiring - Anti Smother/Floor Eggs

This is a grey area! A bit like insurance...if you haven't got it, you can't use it!!  If it is done properly it is ok.

It has to be managed for welfare reasons.
It is usually only used in commercial sheds.
It is to stop the
hens smothering in the corners and also helps prevent floor eggs against the walls.
It can only be realistically done before the hens are in.

Nobody pays you for dead hens and only you pick the floor eggs.

9 Line Electric Fencing

This type of electric fencing was introduced some 20 years ago.  Initially developed to keep predators out of outdoor pig systems, always the farrowing units and often around the field boundary.

This is now discontinued, please see below

Coincidently, as outdoor pig production fell into decline, the production of free range eggs started to climb and has been on the up for the last 5 years.

It soon became clear that this method of fencing was an economical way of deterring predators
with
the added advantage of controlling the movement of the hens as well.

As from 1st January  2009 new EU Regulations and standards of practice within the Electric Fencing Association state that all fencing quoted and erected must be standard 12 line.

12 Line Electric Fencing

This is the same overall height as the old 9 line, but the gap between wires is approx 85mm.

The bottom wire is earthed and all the others are live. If a preditor touches any of the top 11 wires it will receive a shock. It also makes the fence maintainence much easier. Unlike the old 9 line preditors are less likely to jump through the wires.

REMEMBER, ONLY ONE THING STOPS A FOX DEAD.IT COMES OUT THE END OF A GUN!!
Veranda

This area is often overlooked. If done properly it will save you time with the eggs.

The less dirt taken into the house the better.

Dirty eggs slow the packers down!

The best solution is to use 3"- 4" stone, which allows the claws to clean and lets the rain
wash the muck through.

Organic

Outside Flock Control

Inside the shed the flocks are divided, there is no law to say outside the shed is the same,
but it can help to stop hens all going back into one area. It also helps the immediate area
after the veranda getting worn out and can help the hens to range further afield.
